About the Book

The marble lions named Patience and Fortitude made their debut in 1911 at the Dedication of the iconic New York Public Library. They were given their current names in 1933 by Mayor LaGuardia to inspire New Yorkers during the Great Depression. The book also documents many stories of current times. The uniformed soldier who stood on the outside steps between the two lions, giving a salute to honor his friend who died on 9/11 in the collapse of the Twin Towers. Years later, we observe the lions wearing large blue masks in the Covid-era... later, red bandaids on their hips suggesting all should be vaccinated... quietly delivered a public health message. In happier times, they wear a Christmas wreath around their necks or a New York Yankees baseball cap. You'll almost hear the joy of the children who love to climb onto the backs of the lions. Throughout many chapters, you'll discover a philosophical tone. Meanwhile, there are always the authors, poets and artists sitting on the steps, creating and refining their craft while others sit quietly observing the world of people walking down Fifth Avenue, some giving an occasional nod to the lions. The final chapters trace Patience and Fortitude through the modern age, explaining their unexpected fame and long term relevance in the ever-whirling cyclone of digital life. These lions are metaphors in marble and in the brick LEGO lions found in the Children's Center. They do not roar but their power lies in the stillness, inviting you to think and learn. Patience and Fortitude: Two lions. One story. Still being written.
