About the Author
J Michael Shea is an attorney with advanced studies and degrees in city planning and theology. Early in his career he argued Argersinger vs. Hamlin a United States Supreme Court case which expanded Gideon vs. Wainwright another US Supreme Court case which earlier established the right to counsel for those who could not afford an attorney but did not define the scope of the right. Argersinger defined that right to all crimes wherein jail was possible. This led to the further development of the public defender program in the United States and also changed the criminal justice system to include the Miranda warnings, used by all law-enforcement when investigating or interrogating suspects. Since the Argersinger decision Dr. Shea has dedicated his life to helping people and organizations and especially those who need an attorney and cannot afford one. He is the executive director of a pro bono law firm in the state of Florida which provides legal services, free to the poor and working poor. Shea was born in Tampa, Florida and attended local schools, the University of South Florida for his BA in political science, Florida State University for his Juris Doctorate and Florida State University for post-doctoral studies in Urban and Regional Planning. Later in life he attended Saint Leo University while working on his doctorate in Theology and received from the Graduate Theological Foundation which is a spinoff of Notre Dame University.
