If you are reading this, I can only assume you’ve made a terrible mistake. Perhaps you picked up this book thinking it contained cheerful adventures, delightful creatures, or at the very least, a happy ending. I regret to inform you that it contains none of those things. What it does contain is a great deal of rain, a slightly haunted hallway, a missing sandwich (that no one will ever find), and one very unfortunate Tuesday. You may think you're ready. You are not. I could tell you to stop now. Close the book. Slide it back under your bed where it can gather dust alongside that sock you lost last April. But you're still here. Reading. Turning pages as if nothing awful is about to happen. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. And just so we’re perfectly clear, this is not the sort of story where a wide-eyed farm boy discovers he's the chosen one. No ancient sword shall be yanked from a stone. No kindly bearded wizard will arrive in a puff of smoke to say, “You are the last hope of the realm.” If a wizard does show up, he’ll likely be late, smell faintly of soup, and forget your name entirely.
