BEYOND THE SCRUBS

In the heart of a bustling city, life often felt like a relentless race, a whirlwind of noise, lights, and expectations. As an overcommitted healthcare worker, I was perpetually swept up in the demands of my job, responsible for the well-being of others while neglecting my own. I juggled late nights of being on call, the never-ending charting, and a cacophony of beeping machines, all while trying to meet the unyielding expectations of my profession. Unfortunately, this intense pressure contributed to a path of fleeting highs and empty nights, where my addiction became a twisted form of decompressing and relaxing—a façade of relief in a world that felt increasingly overwhelming. My addiction morphed into an all-consuming shadow, creeping into every corner of my life and stripping away ambition, healthy relationships, and, most painfully, my self-worth. What started as something ordinary, dinner with colleagues or friends, had a way of unraveling fast. A couple of drinks blurred into countless rounds, rounds bled into drugs, and before I knew it, the night was gone. Morning always found me. Sunlight cutting through the blinds, birds outside chirping like they were mocking the wreck I’d become. And there I was, standing in some stranger’s kitchen, hollowed out, watching another sunrise I hadn’t earned. It was in one of those random kitchens, with the taste of stale regret in my mouth, that I first admitted to myself—I needed help. Days after turned into weeks, and the hangovers melded seamlessly into the exhaustion of my daily routine. Despite the growing toll on my health and spirit, I still avoided confronting the reality of my choices. I felt trapped in an abyss of my own making, sinking deeper into a pit from which I feared I might never escape. It wasn’t until a close friend—a fellow healthcare provider who had seen me at my worst yet stood steadfast by my side, spoke up. "You’re stronger than this," she said earnestly. "You need to take back your life." That conversation struck a chord within me, igniting a flicker of hope I hadn’t felt in ages.
