The herds supposedly differed about nearly everything and formed two distinct groups of thoughts and opinions as to how the kingdom ought to be run. But more specifically they are of the different thoughts and opinions of a select few; and these were long dead. Nearly all the grey squirrels maintain the opinions of their head squirrel, who, as of now, got his opinion from the Top Squirrel. The same is true of the fox squirrels, only in their case, they were currently not in possession of the great nest high above them. (That could change in the fall, but of that I will say nothing until it is relevant.) Likewise, the leaders had gotten their opinions from the leaders of their younger days, who had gotten their opinions from their leaders in their younger days and so on until we make our way back through the ages to approximately one grey squirrel and one fox squirrel who had different opinions that were actually their own. Indeed, it is quite probable that there has not been one single, good, original thought that has made its way into or out of the minds of a single squirrel since those ancient times. Any distinctions between the herds, however, seldom made a difference in anything that was done in the kingdom. The problems were all the same and there was hardly ever a surprise in the methods that were used to resolve them. Long ago, the original squirrels had dealt repeatedly with nut shortages, foraging boundaries, watering rights, contested hunts, the division between the Top Squirrel and the powers of the red box, and the morality of wire punishments. The original squirrels had formulated their opinions on all these subjects back then, and these same solutions were dug up and proffered by the respective herds at the appropriate times. Depending upon who had more squirrels on either one of the great tree trunks at the time, the same repetitive decisions would be rendered, sometimes to the benefit of the grey herd, sometimes to the benefit of the fox herd, and, just occasionally, to the slight benefit of the rest of the forest creatures.
