About the Book

Every so often, a children’s book comes along that touches the soul of both the child reading it and the adult holding the book. Jennifer Sowers’ Cora, the Fabulous Dancing Flamingo is exactly that kind of captivating story. It teaches children to confidently follow their dreams and be their authentic selves, no matter what others may say. When Cora the flamingo puts on a pair of pink pointe ballet shoes, the Elder birds in the lagoon cry out in shock: “It simply isn’t done!” Despite protests, Cora’s soul, longing to take flight, finds a way to be a ballerina. Written as a lyrical picture book with a beautiful, flowing, melodic quality, this whimsical story follows Cora as she dares to step out of her flock’s expectations and follow the love inside her heart. Taking center stage takes immense courage, but Cora’s belief in herself shines bright. Through her beginning steps and with a breathtaking sense of freedom, she turns the lagoon into her own grand theater. Each page dances with the unbridled joy of life, proving that anyone can break free from the “muck” and spin beautifully “beneath the light of the moon.”

About the Author

Jennifer’s background as a Cardiovascular Intensive Care nurse leaves no surprise that she knows how to speak from the heart. Her transition from medical care to children’s literature is a gift to young readers everywhere. Cora, the Fabulous Dancing Flamingo, is Jennifer’s second illustrated children’s book. Her debut title, This Tree Said, captured her love of trees. In her new book about Miss Cora, Jennifer shares, “We are meant to soar – no matter what life sends our way”. There are many courageous people, who, despite difficult situations, find a way to shine. As a young girl, Jennifer had big dreams of ballet dancing and traveling to faraway places. In her fifties she followed her heart and took ballet lessons for a short time. And yes, she wore pink ballet shoes. Maybe it was a late start, but it was a wonderful thrill none-the-less. Connecting Cora’s story to Jennifer’s personal journey makes the book inspiring for both children and adults. Now retired, Jennifer is a passionate artist and storyteller, residing in Tennessee. She brings the natural world to life through vibrant, whimsical creations. Jennifer uses playful character designs and a brilliant eye for color to capture deep emotions and the joyful spirit.
