When I was young they taught me :
“Dragons Beware”
and if I ever saw one, to run away scared.
I was taught Dragons ran on Magic and Greed
and always took more than they’d ever need.
They told me they were monsters alright,
fire and chaos when they took flight.
But then one night I couldn’t sleep through the thunder
And that’s when my mind, it started to wonder...
How I’d never once seen a dragon in-person, or through photo.
So I grabbed my camera and headed out, solo.
The last Dragon I know of lives deep in the woods,
At the base of the Mountains, a Cave it’s understood.
To start this long journey it’s god to be prepared–
Best go with a buddy so you aren’t caught unaware.
So I set out the door, my Doggy and me,
When lo-and-behold, I see who else could not sleep.
My next door neighbors, Dan and Christie
who had already begun their typical bickery.
“It’s that Dragon that’s banging the clouds all around,”
Dan yelled, “It’s that Dragon that’s making that horrible sound!”
“Don’t be absurd sir, we all know it’s proven fact-”
Christie explained, “that no Dragon could make a sound like that.”
“Oh hey you guys, I was just headed to see,
Once and for all if there truly might be-
Dragons and such. I don’t suppose you two would be–”
Christie burst with glee,
“Of course I’d love to go and see
A creature so majestic and free!”
Dan grumbled to himself, “Humanity, you can count on me.”
So we ventured out into the night, a dense forest before us.
“I heard that Dragons love poetry,” Christie chimed, “Good thing I’ve got my thesaurus.”
“Oh I’M the fool - Oh am I really? I’ve never hear a thing quite so silly-
As a Dragon who was taught and learned to read” Dan snapped, his voice shrilly.
“Why must you two argue about Dragons you’ve never known?
We are out to shine our lights where they’ve never shone!
So agree to disagree and let’s be on our way
And go and see what this Dragon’s got to say!” I declared.
So we trekked down the hill, deep in the valley,
Where we began to smell something...rather smelly.
A fox was washing his face along the stream
Groaning, “Boy, skunks are not as nice as they seem!”
Dan waved and smiled as he stepped to approach,
Seemingly fearless that we might be poached.
“You seem like you know your way through the Woods-
How would you like to earn your knighthood?”
“Stop it Dan, just watch what you say!
We’re looking for Dragons to meet, not Dragons to slay,” Christie exclaimed.
“Oh a Dragon you seek?” began the Fox, “Well you’re going the wrong way.
But they aren’t much fun if I do so say.”
Smugly, Dan asked,
“Because they are so greedy and mean?”
The Fox pondered.
“Mmm–No. It’s more that they’re too stingy and keen.
They’re too stubborn to pull the wool over their eyes.”
Christie cut in, “Like I’ve said before,
So Majestic and Wise.”
So we crossed the water and followed its edge,
All the way down it’s westward bend.
“Who goes there?” cawed a Crow who swooped down from the trees.
“No one can go past here, says so me!”
