Becoming Laila

Dubai hit her before she even cleared the jetway. The noise first — a wall of it, conversations bleeding into each other in Arabic, Tagalog, Hindi, English, the babel of a city that belongs to everyone and no one. Then the smell of recycled air and duty-free perfume, and then the terminal itself opening up around her, vast and glittering and relentless. Laila walked with the crowd because that's what you did here. You moved with the current or you got swept under. Around her, passengers fanned out in every direction — Emirati men in crisp white kanduras, Western expats in rumpled suits, domestic workers in modest uniforms clutching plastic bags. Everyone with somewhere to be. Everyone with a purpose written plainly on their face. She didn't have that luxury. Her uncle was two days buried in Manila, and she was already back. The grief hadn't caught up with her yet — it was still somewhere over the Indian Ocean, trailing behind her like luggage she hadn't claimed. What she felt right now was something closer to fog. A heaviness behind the eyes. The kind of exhaustion of a person who has cried on a plane and then had to pretend, for hours, that she hadn't. Immigration loomed ahead. The queues were long, snaking back on themselves in that patient, resigned way of people who have no choice but to wait. Laila joined them. It was somewhere in that queue, shuffling forward inch by inch under the fluorescent lights, that the feeling crept in. Something wrong. Something she'd missed. Her mind turned it over slowly, too tired to move fast, and then — “Oh God.” The realization landed like ice water. She had forgotten. In the grief and the rush and the sleepless flights, she had completely forgotten the single most important rule of her life in the Middle East: present male to the authorities. Papers, posture, presentation — male. But she wasn't presenting male. Not even close. Her hair fell past her shoulders in loose waves. Her lips were still red — she hadn't even thought to wipe off the lipstick. Her face, her hands, the way she stood — everything about her read as what she was. A beautiful woman. And her passport said something else entirely.
