In his palm, Christopher clutched a small leather-bound, slightly worn book, what he presumed must be his great-grandfather’s diary. Both men were silent as he turned his hand this way and that, inspecting his find with a kind of breathless reverence. His eyes veered to his mentor. “His journal?” Robert nodded, “Yes.” Christopher began paging through the documentation. Meticulous notes and exact drawings met his eyes, observations and instructions; it was all there. He paged further to Joseph’s last day at Machu Picchu, the adrenaline pumping swiftly through his veins. He was compelled to read the final entry, and his eyes locked onto the neatly documented script. One word alone leaped out at him from the seventy-two-year-old record— a word that turned his thinking processes on end and began an escalating spiral of excitement within the core of his being. He stared at the hand-written account, read the same words over and over several times, to be sure. But was this even possible? A long, astonished breath escaped him. There was no doubt. Joseph Bennet had gone to Machu Picchu to find an ancient Inca gateway. In modern-day terms— a time portal. In silence, Robert watched his grandson’s reaction; his had been similar. When Christopher finally looked up at Robert, his face was much paler than before, even in the dim lighting of the attic. In a choked whisper he breathed, “My God . . .”
