Zoey was nervous when it was her turn to sit on Santa’s lap. He patted his knee and lifted her onto his lap. “What can I get you for Christmas this year?” Santa asked.
“Santa, what I want isn’t for me. What I want is for my mom. She has been so sad since my dad died in the war. He was over in Afghan,” Zoey stated.
Santa asked her if she meant Afghanistan. And she said yes, that was the place her dad died. Santa chuckled with a ho ho ho.
“Santa, I want her to be happy,” Zoey told Santa. “I want her to laugh again like she did with my dad and smile.”
Zoey looked into Santa’s eyes, “My wish is for my mom to be happy for Christmas.”
Santa looked down at the little girl on his lap and smiled, “That is Zoey’s Christmas wish this year?”
“Yes, it is. Everything else I can get from my great grandpa,” she said, smiling.
The man wearing the Santa suit laughed as he heard her talk about her great-grandpa. He knew David Morgan, as many people did in this area. He also heard about Zoey’s dad dying during the departure of Americans from the airport.
“Zoey, Christmas is a special time when miracles do happen. People find that special love of Christmas and those around them. Your mom is going to be okay. Just have faith in the spirit of Christmas.”
Reaching up to give Santa a hug, Santa pulled her into his arms and gave her a big hug. “Miracles do happen at Christmas, Zoey. You just need to believe,” Santa whispered in her ear.
